"Critical Condition" by Roger Weisberg ("Waging a Living," P.O.V. 2006) puts a human face on the nation's growing health care crisis by capturing the harrowing struggles of four critically ill Americans who discover that being uninsured can cost them their jobs, health, home, savings, even their lives. Filmed in vérité style, "Critical Condition" offers a moving and invaluable expose at a time when the nation is debating how to extend health insurance to all Americans.

Help Make the Purple Line a Reality!

Dear Friends,

For over 20 years, environmental, civic, business, and activist groups have been fighting to add a Purple Line to the region's metrorail system. But for this to become a reality, we must act now. This light rail project would run from Bethesda to New Carrollton, with stops in Chevy Chase, College Park, Silver Spring, .Takoma/Langley, and more. But more importantly, in the midst of growing concern about our climate, unceasing traffic congestion, long commutes, and a looming recession impacted by high gas prices -- the Purple Line would encourage environmentally responsible development, take 20,000 cars off the road, shorten commutes and improve our economy.

There are three actions you can take to make this Light Rail Transit Line a reality.

1. Sign our On-Line petition TODAY: Help us reach our goal of 5,000 signatures - a small percentage of the 1.5 million daily transit riders in our region. Go to: purplelinenow.com for a direct link to the petition.  There is also a link to request one of our new "Purple Line Greener Future" lawn signs at this page.

2. Volunteer to circulate a letter in support of the Purple Line among your neighbors, condo association members or other friends and colleagues.  Contact purplecampaign@yahoo.com to help. Take Action: Prevent War on Iran

Attack on Iran Imminent! Stop HCR 362! If there is a time this year that you are going to take action, this should be it.  A new bill, House Concurrent Resolution 362, which essentially calls for a blockade of Iran, is steamrolling its way through the House.  Please call or email your Representative to urge a vote AGAINST HCR 362 the Blockade of Iran bill. As an antidote, SUPPORT HCR 321 which calls for a comprehensive diplomatic engagement with Iran and other Middle Eastern nations as a way to resolve disputes and provide a responsible end to our occupation of Iraq. Join PDA and other groups in a national call-in/email campaign beginning immediately. Read more details from the PDA web site. Call the Capitol switch board (202)-224-3121 and ask for your Representative, or click here for an email Action Alert. You can also use our action alert system to write a letter to the editor of your local newspaper(s) and national media outlets. HCR 362 is a dangerous bill calling for severe sanctions--far beyond those proposed by the Bush administration--and could be interpreted as an act of war under international law. It would further alienate Iran and could trigger retaliation against our troops in Iraq and Afghanistan, blockage of oil shipments through the straits of Hormuz, and potential involvement of other nations in the region.  If we want catastrophe in the Middle East,  deeper recession and gas at $6 per gallon, this would do it. A much more effective alternative is HCR 321 which calls for a serious and sustained diplomatic initiative involving Iraq, Iran, Syria, and other neighboring states.  This bill provides a responsible way out of Iraq and an avenue for dispute resolution with Iran and other nations. PDA supports HCR 321 as a major step toward returning to diplomacy not war as our primary tool of foreign policy.  PLEASE DO YOUR PART AND TAKE ACTION TODAY. As PDA board member Norman Solomon pointed out in this article, “nearly one in six Americans has no health insurance, and tens of millions of others are woefully under-insured--while the war in Iraq continues to further skew the U.S. government's budget priorities.”

We say “Healthcare NOT Warfare” and ask you to join our campaign. The time has come to redirect unnecessary and wasteful military spending to meeting human needs. 

Among  those needs is the healthcare crisis and we're focusing our attention on the Democratic Party by gathering signatures on a petition  to prioritize "Healthcare NOT Warfare." The signed petition will be distributed to Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, Democratic Committee Chairman Howard Dean, and your member of Congress.

In addition, we hope to pass resolutions to support “Healthcare NOT Warfare” at the upcoming local, state, and national Democratic conventions, and in cities, counties, and states across the country.
