Join filmmaker Cintia Cabib and the Neighborhood Farm Initiative for a
special 30-minute work-in-progress screening of the documentary "A
Community of Gardeners" at the Letelier Theater in Washington, D.C. "A
Community of Gardeners" explores the vital role of seven urban community
gardens in Washington, D.C., not only as sources of fresh, nutritious
food, but as outdoor classrooms, places of healing, centers of social
interaction, and oases of beauty and calm in inner-city neighborhoods.

The event will feature local light fare, drinks, and live music
beginning at 6:30 p.m. The screening will begin at 7:30 p.m. "A

Whole Foods is NOT a company that cares for communities and they have
built their brand with the dollars of deceived progressives. No more.
Whole Foods' anti-union, anti-health reform, right-wing activities do
not deserve our support.

John Mackey, CEO and co-founder of Whole Foods wrote an op-ed in the
Wall Street Journal on 8/12/2009 quoting Margaret Thatcher and
suggesting that healthcare is a commodity that only the rich, like him,
deserve. (see below) He's contributed money made from us to Tom DeLay's
campaigns and legal defense fund.

Yesterday a group of ten of us went to a neighborhood and made house calls for health reform. We teamed up in pairs of health providers and advocates. We knocked on doors and talked to people about HR 676 and collected signatures on petitions asking Congressman Sarbanes to co-sponsor HR 676. We encourage you to do the same if you live in Sarbanes' (3rd), Van Hollen's (8th) or Hoyer's (5th) districts. These are the members of Congress from Maryland whom we we are encouraging to sign onto HR 676.

INFORMATION ABOUT HR 676:

1.      The petition is for HR 676: National Health Care Act introduced by Congressman John Conyers from Michigan. The bill has 83 co-sponsors at present--the most of any health care bill in the House.

2.      HR 676 would create a national health system based on the improvement and expansion of Medicare--a uniquely American plan that covers all people aged 65 and over.

3.      All people living in the United States would receive a medical card and would be able to receive needed medical care at any health provider or health facility in the U.S. It is truly universal: Everybody in and nobody out.

4.      The health system would include all needed outpatient and inpatient care, preventative services, prescription drugs and medical equipment, mental health services, dental, vision, substance abuse treatment and long term care.

5.      The United States currently spends 2 to 3 times more per person on health care than the other industrialized nations. The other nations have health systems that include everyone and have better health outcomes than the U.S.

6.      A national health system based on single payer financing in the U.S. would save more than a trillion dollars over a ten year period. It would end co-pays and deductibles which prevent patients from getting needed health care. It would end the more than 1 million medical bankruptcies which occur in the U.S. each year.

7.      Independent polls consistently demonstrate that the majority of the American population, including the majority of health care providers, prefer a national health system.

8.      There are 2 co-sponsors from Maryland so far: Congresswoman Donna Edwards and Congressman Elijah Cummings.

9.      Congressman Sarbanes has not signed on to HR 676 despite numerous meetings and requests. If you want Congressman Sarbanes to co-sponsor HR 676, please sign the petition and/or contact him at:

Supporters of single-payer have been asking for hearings on the merits
of single payer in the committees of jurisdiction in the House. A
hearing was held in Education and Labor on June 10th. We have news that
Cong. Waxman has agreed to a hearing next week in Energy and Commerce.
Now we need to continue to push Cong. Rangel (D-NY) in Ways and Means.

Our own Cong. Van Hollen is in Ways and Means.
Please call Chairman Rangel and request a hearing on the merits of a

We'll be holding meetings and events to make a real difference in our county, state and nation.

Who are all these organizations and what do they do?

1. MCPA: The Montgomery County Progressive Alliance is a flexible, result-oriented coalition. MCPA includes more than 1,000 local activists, mainly in and around Montgomery County Maryland. The organization began in 2003 when Democracy for America Meetup members reached out to other Meetup groups and other groups. In 2004, 100s of Montgomery County for Kerry members and local Progressive Democrats of America members joined the MCPA. MCPA adopted a mission statement, organized special events, and has held meetings nearly each month since 2003. MCPA members worked to elect progressive leaders, led issue advocacy efforts in Rockville, Annapolis, and on Capitol Hill, and cooperated with other organizations and coalitions to make progress in our communities, state, and nationally. Moving into the rest of 2009 and building toward 2010, MCPA plans to solidify our organization, raise funds, and continue our public education and outreach efforts. MCPA is currently seeking new steering committee members and coalition partners.

2. DFA/DFMC: Democracy for America emerged from Gov. Howard Dean's presidential campaign in 2004, and has organized grass-roots activists to support socially progressive, fiscally responsible candidates. DFMC is Democracy for Montgomery County, a local DFA-inspired organization which is not directly or legally affiliated with DFA. DFMC has organized events and meetings; and endorsed and organized volunteers for several candidates. DFMC is currently seeking additional steering committee members. 3. PDA: Progressive Democrats of America began just after the 2004 Democratic National Convention in Boston. Bringing together people from the 2004 Kucinich and Dean Campaigns with other progressives, PDA adopted an "inside/outside strategy" uniting activists working inside the Democratic Party with those working in peace and justice movements. PDA's core issues include clean, accurate and transparent elections; environmental protection; single-payer healthcare; economic and social justice; and peace. You can sign up for PDA here:

4. PWG: The Progressive Working Group is a coalition promoting progress and reform, economic fairness and equality, protecting the environment, and more. PWG endorsed 14 issues for the 2009 General Assembly session. PWG currently includes: Audubon Naturalist Society, CASA of Maryland, Democracy for Montgomery County, Equality Maryland, Health Care Now, Montgomery County Progressive Alliance, Montgomery Health Care Action, PeaceAction Montgomery, Peace and Justice of Prince George's County, Progressive Cheverly, Progressive Democrats of America (Maryland), Progressive Neighbors, Save Our Votes, and Upcounty Action.
