HANDS OFF SOCIAL SECURITY! protest Fiscal Commission Monday, Sept. 20, Noon at 1775 I Street

PLEASE FORWARD FAR AND WIDE...

HANDS OFF SOCIAL SECURITY!

Join UE members in protesting Fiscal Commission Co-Chair Erskine Bowles
Monday, Sept. 20, Noon at 1775 I Street

Strengthen Social Security Campaign members -- let's join with UE – the
United Electrical Workers union, which is bringing more than 100 members
to Washington for three days of lobbying their senators and
representatives on workers' issues. They plan to kick off their visit
with a demonstration outside Morgan Stanley, whose board of directors
includes Eskine Bowles. We'll have plenty of Hands Off Social Security
placards for you to wave.

Erskine Bowles is co-chair of the bi-partisan "National Commission on
Fiscal Responsibility and Reform", whose mandate is to find ways to
reduce the federal deficit, but which has instead made Social Security
its primary target. It is expected to come out with recommendations
after the election – too late for voters to have a say – and to call for
raising the retirement age to 70 and other cuts in Social Security benefits.

In the late 1990s Bowles served as President Clinton's White House chief
of staff. Bowles negotiated with Newt Gingrich a plan to partially
privatize Social Security. That deal fell apart in the Clinton-Lewinsky
scandal.

Social Security plays no role in the federal deficit – it pays its own
way with a dedicated revenue stream and a trust fund of $2.5 trillion.
On the other hand Morgan Stanley – Mr. Bowles' bank – received $10
billion in the TARP bailout after it took part in the financial orgy
that dragged the entire economy into crisis.

UE says: No cuts to Social Security, and no increase in the retirement
age. Remove the income "cap" on FICA taxes so the wealthy pay their fair
share. And make banks like Morgan Stanley pay to clean up the economic
mess they've made.

Monday, September 20 – 12:00 to 12:30 p.m.
Morgan Stanley Bank
1775 I Street NW, Washington
(Directly across from Farragut West Metro, 18th Street exit)
